Silk Top
Silk tops are a rope like form of silk fibre consisting of individual fibres that range from 7 to 9cm long.
Silk tops can be laid out in the same fashion as felting wool on top of a bed of wool fibres and wet felted to create a lustrous surface design on a finished piece of woollen felt.
The fibres can also be arranged in layers without any wool and a textile bonding medium applied to create beautiful handmade silk paper.
Tussah silk is the product of the wild caterpillar Antheraea which feeds naturally on a diet of leaves that contain tannin, giving the tussah silk in its natural state, a honey coloured appearance. Tussah silk tops have a slightly more woolly, fibrous appearance.
Mulberry Silk(also known as Bombyx Silk) is created by feeding mulberry leaves to domesticated caterpillars (Bombyx Mori) .
Our experience is that once wet felted into our felting wool, our tussah and mulberry silk tops produce the same amount of lustre.
