Ideas for Christmas Cards

Presenting as Christmas Card featuring your own hand made felt is a very special statement.
The concept is to firstly design a silk image to embed into a wool felt background and attach this to the front of your Christmas Card.
The skills required are silk papermaking and feltmaking. Please consult our Making Silk Paper for Felting link and Basic Beginner’s Feltmaking Guide for instructions if you are new to these crafts.
I made some silk paper from Shimma Silktops in willow for the tree, clay for the trunk and gold for the star.
I then cut these silk papers into the shapes I wanted and placed them on a base of one layer of Turkish Red Felbi prefelt.
This was then handfelted, rinsed, ironed, then attached to the front of the Christmas card with an all purpose UHU glue suitable for textiles.

If requiring a few christmas cards, start with a larger area felting base.  Repeat your silk design maybe 6 or 8 times allowing enough space around the edge of each design

Felt as a single peice until about two thirds of the way through the felting process  then cut the large base into individual card sizes.  Each piece can then be felted individually .  You will achieve a lot straighter edges this way.
