Sue Pearl demonstrates how to make 25 wacky and adorable felted animal shapes  by  creating pipe cleaner skeletons stuffed and wrapped with felting wool . She proceeds to wet felt the outer surfaces and then needle felting on the appendages and embellishments.  Spiders, monkeys, snakes, ducks and dogs...anything is possible.  This concept could  then easily be applied to any sculptural shape you are wanting to create.
